(Sofia, 24 April, 2009) The leader in the world chess ranking Veselin Topalov is favourite to win the 5th edition of the super chess tournament M-Tel Masters. The competition will start on 12 May at the square in front of the National Theatre Ivan Vazov. For the title up to 23 May will compete the leader in the world ranking Veselin Topalov, Magnus Carlsen from Norway, the last year winner Vassily Ivanchuk from Ukraine, Leinier Dominguez from Cuba, Alexei Shirov from Spain and Yue Wang from China. The average ELO of the competitors is 2755, which makes the tournament FIDE 21st category. So far only 5 chess tournaments have been of this rank.
The leading world bookmakers are already accepting bets for final winner in the competition. The odds for Topalov are from 2.5 to 2.7. Close to Topalov’s odds is Magnus Carlsen, his odds are around 3. According to the bet houses the big surprise can come from the Cuban Leinier Dominguez and the Chinese Yue Wang. Their odds for final victory are over 10.
The first three editions M-Tel Masters were won by the 19th world champion Veselin Topalov. Last year the trophy left for Ukraine – the tournament was won by Vasiliy Ivanchuk and now he is to defend his title.
The first place in M-Tel Masters gives the winner the right to participate in the final tournament from the Grand Prix chain, which will be in Bilbao, Spain. Three of the grandmasters had already secured their places in the final – Veselin Topalov, as the winner of the tournament in Njanzin, China, Sergey Karjakin, as the winner of the tournament Corus in Wijk an Zee and Alexander Gristuk, as the winner of the tournament in Linares.
